For the past few months I have been sharing my music favourites with you all and I thought I would continue with that tradition as well as adding a few extra faves for this month.

Keeping that in mind, here are a few (and by a few, I mean the bare minimum) things I have been enjoying during May.

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolors

Matte lip creams are all the range right now and I had tried to keep my distance due to their drying finish on the lips. However, I recently saw Zoella talk about the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolors and she raved about their staying power as well as their moisturising finish on the lips.

After much deliberation and waiting for a sale at my local Priceline store, I bought 4 shades and I really love these! They apply to the lips very much like other lupcreams do, and while there is a degree of mattifying, there is a tiny amount of sheen left on the lips to keep the product feeling fresh and coach-free all day.

There are a range of shades including the perfect pink/mauve colour, a’la Kylie Jenner as well as deeper, berry-tones which are perfect for the warmer weather (in Australia).

FitBit Charge HD

With impending weddings of 2 close friends later this year, I have really been making an effort to get fit and healthy this year. Partially to look good in wedding photos and partially because I want to live an active lifestyle and take care of myself.

Along with healthy meal choices, I have been upping my exercise and really challenging myself to meet goals and have fun with my workouts (if you’d like to know what kind of workouts I have been doing lately, let me know and I will do a post about my favourite things!).

So, I invested in a FitBit and let me tell you – this thing is amazing. Not only is it a pedometer, which helps me keep track of my daily step counts, but it synchs to an app on smartphones in which you can record your calorie intake, your water intake, your weightless goals and it even synchs and records the workouts you do to let you know the calories you burn. You can use the app as a food log, you can use it to see how many flights of stairs you have taken each day and you can even record your sleeping patterns with it!!!

Pretty cool, huh? I’ve found that the app makes me more accountable. Especially when I participate in group step challenges with friends who also have FitBits – nobody wants to see their name last on the leader board!

Music

How awesome was May when it came to new music? There have been so many new songs released this past month and I have been so happy to listen to them all on my Spotify playlist.

The Billboard Music Awards was on last week and there were some amazing performances by some incredible artists. My fave was definitely Troye Sivan’s performance of ‘YOUTH’.

It just makes me so happy to see him living his dreams and enjoying every single moment of it!

5 Ways To Get Organised At Work


Since starting my new job last week, I have had organisation on my mind. I wanted to begin this new chapter with a clean, tidy and organised work life, and although sometimes things can get hectic, I feel I have managed (and will hopefully continue to manage) the art of organisation within the workplace.

Here are 5 quick tips on how to organise yourself so you are getting the most out of your workspace and work time…

  • Write lists

Something I have done for years (since I was in high school) is write lists. Whether it is a list of things I need to complete for the day, week or month, I find that writing things down at the start of the day/week/month can be really helpful in getting things out onto paper. Take a moment each morning while you drink your first of many coffees for the day and write down the important tasks you need to complete/start on. When you have completed a task, cross it out – it feels so satisfying to see your list decrease as time goes on, and it also keeps you up to speed in the instance of someone asking you for a status report. If it’s crossed out, it’s done!

  • Prioritise

Taking the above List tip to another level is the art of prioritisation. Write your list and then take a moment to go through your tasks and have a think: what needs to be done ASAP? What can wait a day? Number your items from 1 (most important) to help you organise what you need to achieve. Another really important thing with prioritisation is speaking up and asking questions. If 3 people give you work that needs to be done ‘ASAP’, sometimes asking when exactly the task needs to be done can help ease stress. Sometimes people are happy to wait a day or two for things and others need things arranged right away. Speak up so that you aren’t caught in the middle of a rush that may not be needed.

  • File

Group your paperwork into files and store them in the same spot. Same goes for digital files on your computer/laptop – the easier you group things together, the easier it will be to find them in future. Be basic with what you call your files (for example: Invoices, Bank Statements, Customer Records) and then break things down further if you feel it works better that way (for example: Invoices – May, Bank Statements – 2016, Customer Records – A-C). Remember to be very basic with the names you give your folders/files so that finding files in future won’t be a headache.

  • Use Microsoft Outlook’s ‘Calendar’and ‘Tasks’ Features

Take advantage of the tools you have to schedule and plan your days. Once you get the hang of Microsoft Outlook’s Calendar and Task features, it is so easy to not only keep track of your own productivity, but others’ as well. Calendar allows the user to create events and invite other attendees to the events, creating an event on their calendar as well. You can send Tasks to others with instructions on what is needed to be done and the date which it should be prioritised for. Once the task has been completed and ticked off, you will be notified. I find it really worthwhile to use whatever calendar feature your computer may have to really set out what time you are using.

  • Keep Tidy

This is really a given, but it needs to be said – clean up. Tidy your desk. Wash your coffee cup. Put your waste paper in the recycling or use it as note paper. File away books and bundle up your spare pens. The tidier your office/deskspace is will help you in the event of a stressful day and will hopefully make it easier when you are desperately needing to find a certain thing. Take 5 minutes at the end of each day to tidy so that you can arrive to a clutter-free area the next morning.

Top 5 Movies For A Rainy Day

The weather is getting chilly and the days are becoming drizzly with rain. On a weekend like this, with no plans set, what better thing would there be to do than have a movie day?

Here are 5 movies I love watching on any kind of day, but they definitely fit perfectly with a dreary day.

Singin’ In The Rain (1953)

Why You Should Watch It: Well, the title of this movie does fit with the theme, here! Also, what’s a movie marathon day without some kind of classic/musical combination? This movie is one of my all-time faves and with it being over 60 years old, it definitely has stood the test of time!

 

Jerry Maguire (1996)

Why You Should Watch It: Younger Tom Cruise pre couch-jump, smooching Renee Zellweger and sharing scenes with the adorable kid from Stuart Little? I’m here for it. This movie is the perfect blend of comedy/drama and it has a killer soundtrack (just like all over movies directed by Cameron Crowe).

 

Reality Bites (1994)

Why You Should Watch It: I feel like anyone in their twenties who isn’t 100% sure about what they are doing with their life will appreciate this film. Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke ooze chemistry and each character is so relatable, regardless of the fact that this movie is over 20 years old. Goes to show that times can change but emotions never do.

 

Beauty and the Beast (1994)

Why You Should Watch It: Disney. Isn’t that all the convincing you need? I am a huge Disney movie fan, and there are so many other movies I could have also chosen for this list. This is my personal favourite. The songs are broadway-level perfect and as an adult, I now realise how dark/dramatic this film is. A perfect movie to watch and forget about your age/responsibilties, even if only for a few hours.

 

Bridesmaids (2011)

Why You Should Watch It: I have watched this movie with women and men of all ages and everyone has laughed so hard that we were disappointed when the movie ended. It’s THAT funny. A modern classic comedy which is smart, relatable and just plain hilarious. I feel like women don’t have many comedies which are centred around female friendships rather than romance. I love that this movie kickstarted a new wave of female-centred comedies.

New Beginnings | Personal Update

A little over a month ago I wrote a post in which I detailed some of the changes that were occurring in my life. In fact, one of the main reasons I have persevered with this blog (besides my love of writing) was to have some kind of outlet for my emotions while dealing with my life for the past weeks.

Thankfully, I have finally been able to make lemonade out of the lemons which life had thrown at me back in February and I am happy to let you all in on some exciting news:

I have a new job!

I will be starting at my new position on Monday. I won’t give too much information away (more for the reason that I don’t really know much about it yet!), but I will say that it is a temporary Executive Assistant position.

Now, I know you probably saw the word ‘temporary‘ and had the same cringed look on your face that I did. But I decided to just go for it. No more worrying or nitpicking about things. I decided that something is better than nothing. Working within a field that I have experience in, within a position which is respectable and exciting to me outweighed all the negative points I had when thinking of my options. If a full-time position becomes available in the meantime, I may take it. But for now, I am feeling happy.

I am nervous of beginning work at a new organisation. I am sure my first day will be like the first day of high school – meeting new people, trying to find my way around and eventually finding a few people I can really rely on to make my experience a positive one. I’m looking forward to learning new things, helping new people and just starting fresh. A clean slate has been handed to me and I am so ready to write my next chapter onto it.

So, I guess this little update was as much as a way for me to write my feelings down about this change as it was for me to get a message out for whoever is reading this to hopefully connect to:

Do not give up. Life is difficult sometimes and regardless of how big or small the challenge is that you are faced with, there are ways to get through and eventually get to a place where you feel relieved and motivated again. It’s a matter of never forgetting what your goals and passions are and continuing to perservere during those negative moments.

I have not completely met my life goals yet. I have so many things that I want to achieve within the next year, and I now know that with determination and hard work, I will be able to get closer to the finish line and start another marathon towards yet another chapter of my life.

I wanted to thank anyone who has sent me encouraging messages during the past few months. Your words of positivity and understanding helped push me through to the other side.

I’m off to have a glass (or two) of wine to celebrate this new chapter in my life finally beginning – I’ll be toasting to every one of you!

Life Advice – 5 ways I harness my anxiety

After a less-than-positive day, I wanted to use my personal struggle with anxiety issues as a basis for this post.

Today was planned to be a very productive day, and from the moment my eyes opened this morning, I knew it would not be going according to schedule.

Anxiety of any form makes life incredibly difficult. Most days it is undetectable by others that I am struggling. And then there are days where it is out there, at it’s worst and available for the whole world to see.

This isn’t going to be the story about my past issues with anxiety, or a deep description of how it feels on my worst days to battle such a illness. The truth is: if you suffer from some form of anxiety disorder, you already know what it feels like.

I wanted to take what I have learned about harnessing my anxiety issues. I use the word ‘harness’ as that is exactly what we need to do – take the reins of the thing trying to control our emotions and our body and steer our anxiety to a safe place.

 

1.. Breathe

This is one I am sure you’ve heard before during moments where someone else can recognise you’re feeling overwhelmed. However, if you learn how to breathe for relaxation purposes, it can be incredibly calming.

There are YouTube videos which can help you with learning how to focus on your breathing during anxious times as well as an amazing app which I have been using for the past year. Taking a few minutes at the beginning of your day to (try) and centre yourself, your thoughts and your mind can really effect your overall wellbeing positively.

 

2.. Time Out

Not everyone has the ability to drop everything and take a sick day. However, taking time out during your day to be alone can be extremely helpful in clearing your mind and recharging your body. Whether it’s taking an hour in the morning to read, or spending some time in the evening watching an episode of your favourite TV show; doing ‘nothing’ and isolating yourself for a small time can really help defuse an anxious period.

 

3.. Write It Down

Having a place to write down how you feel on a daily basis can be really cathartic and also very helpful in the event of seeking help from a professional as you have your thoughts/feelings written down for reference. Don’t be afraid to be honest with how you feel on a daily basis, even trying to write down what setting/event you may have been exposed to during moments where your anxiety is heightened. Just as important, write about times when you’re feeling better, and how you might have been able to get your anxiety under control.

 

4.. Work Out

Now, I’m not one to tell you to get on the treadmill for 30 minutes, followed by a pilates session every morning…but, sometimes moving and working out does help with releasing tension, focusing on yourself and gaining some endorphins from whatever makes you work up a sweat. Try and find 20 minutes a day to go for a walk outside (fresh air does wonders for the soul), or put on a work out DVD or find a video on YouTube to follow which might be entertaining to try.

 

5.. Talk To Someone

As much as the thought of talking to a complete stranger about our anxiety and personal issues seems frightening (and, well, it is for the first session), getting help is sometimes exactly what we need to find a better path for us to continue learning about ourselves.

Speaking as someone who has seen a counsellor before, sometimes all you may need is someone you don’t know to tell you that how you are feeling is okay. Knowing that you are not the only one feeling the way you are can be comforting and also can be incredibly beneficial when you are seeking help.

If you are after someone to talk to over the phone, whether it’s due to an urgent matter, or you don’t wish to be seen face-to-face, there are also phone helplines which are designed to speak with people any time of the day or night (and they are usually a free call, too).

 

Your mental health is important. How you feel on a daily basis is important. My hope is that the next generation are able to speak out about their anxiety issues with more support and understanding that the generations before us.

You are never alone in your struggle and please remember that it is never too late to reach out if you think you need a helping hand in harnessing your anxiety issues, no matter how big or small they may seem.

Happy Mother’s Day


To my beautiful mother: I will never be able to show you how much I love and appreciate everything you do for me. I only hope that in all of the days I live, I am able to make you proud of me. 

To the mothers out there reading: have a spectacular day with your loved ones and take a moment to cherish the gift of your children/family.


To the children out there reading: never forget the moments your mother was there for you, or the moments your dad was there to step up as both parents. The strength that parents hold is not earned, it isn’t taught…its just there. They’re all trying their best. Don’t let petty things ruin your relationship with mum and dad. Tell them you love them and spend time with them, even when you might not think they’re ‘cool’ enough for you. 


To those who’s mothers are no longer with them…I’m sending you all the love in the world. I will light a candle and think of you tonight. Please do something fun in honour of your mum, and smile when you think of her.

Saturday Night Bonfire


Just got home from a lovely evening with friends. 

My friend’s parents live on a farm and once a year they like to make the most of burning off extra crop by holding a bonfire evening.

Thankfully, the cool Autumn air has finally arrived, with the evening warmed up as the fire grew. There was actually 4 separate fires burning in total – at one point it almost looked like we were the only small group of people left alone on earth from some kind of apocolyptic war. 


There were also fireworks throughout the night, which I just love. I think that fireworks are one of those things that make me instantly feel like a child again, even just for a few seconds. The wonder and excitement when seeing the colourful sparkles in the sky just takes my breath away. 

I really don’t take evenings like this for granted. Especially as I get older and see my friends less and less, as we all have so much to do. 

Sitting around with drinks, laughing and having fun for a few hours in the light of those warm flames was just what I needed tonight to end a rather boring week. 

Feeling like I can take on the coming week with confidence and hope.
